Quixel has released Mixer 2018.2, the latest update to its tool for blending and editing scanned materials, including those from its own Megascans online library.
Taskpaper 3 7 6 – simple to do lists. The software, which is free to all Megascans subscribers, now supports layer masks, opacity-based blending, and a number of workflow improvements.
Blend real-world material scan data, including that from the Megascans library
Despite the new version number, Mixer is still a fairly new app: version 1.0 only came out this summer.
The tool enables users to blend 3D scans of real-world materials using a simple, non-destructive, layer-based workflow, fine tuning the result via a combination of slider controls and numeric parameters.
Although it's specifically designed to work with Megascans – you can access the library directly from within the software – it should work with scan data from any source.
New in Mixer 2018.2: layer masks and opacity blending
The major new feature in Mixer 2018.2 is support for layer masks. These can be imported as grayscale images, or painted directly, with the option to invert a mask or copy and paste it between layers.

It is also now possible to blend layers according to their opacity information as well as their height maps; and speed and quality of blending have been improved, with a range of new control presets.

Updated 15 November 2018: Quixel has released Quixel Mixer 2018.2.2.
The update adds an 'all-new' Eye Dropper tool for sampling colours from images, including the option to sample average values from a user-customisable sample area.
Other new features include an orthographic view, camera-aligned snapping and new options for painting straight lines, intended to make it easier to make precise edits to materials.
Users can also now change the textures assigned to a material layer while retaining its parameter values, described as a 'first step' towards making layers more modular.
In addition, the update adds a number of new brushes to Mixer's library, plus a set of readymade HDRIs, including both indoor and outdoor lighting set-ups. You can see a full list of changes on Quixel's blog.
Pricing and availability
Mixer 2018.2.2 is available in beta for Windows and Mac OS X. You need a Megascans subscription to activate the software.
